1. Boost productivity by investing in a comfortable chair
This is the most important item in a home office, which not many people take as seriously. If you’d like to avoid back or shoulder pain, weight gain, and even digestive issues due to poor blood circulation get a really good office chair. Not only will you have an improved posture and enjoy enhanced blood circulation & joint health you’ll be able to have more energy, allowing you to be more focused and productive especially if you’re at your desk all day staring at a computer. What chairs should you buy? For more budget-minded buyers the comfortable, stylish, and durable Branch office chair at CAD $369 from EQ3 (below left) is a good place to start. Next up is the CAD $637 Soji Mesh Back Office Chair (below middle) from Haworth which is known for making comfortable, long-lasting, high quality office furniture. For those who want the best that money can buy, there’s no beating Herman Miller’s CAD $2,369 Aeron Classic chair (below right) where the back & seat are both made of mesh. It’s the gold standard for office chairs and loved by tech companies worldwide. I have one myself that I bought new almost 30 years ago when it was selling for $ 850. Buy them used on FB marketplace for 60% - 70% off the original price and you’ll get a virtually indestructible, extremely supportive, and sleek office chair that will allow you to do your work energetically and painlessly.
2. Make it easy to work and find things easily with a functional desk
The second most important piece of office furniture you should have is a proper desk. Not a low ottoman that would force you to sit on the floor. Not an island kitchen which would mean you having to sit on a cold and hard stool, or something pretty but not as functional (like the desk pictured below on the left which I owned for a few years before I was forced to give it up some for something that had drawers and shelves). If you want to build a business empire that will succeed faster, you have to pay attention to function as well as form when it comes to your work area. As a result of not having the right type of equipment, I had a lot of papers lying around the floor under my desk as I had no place to store my printer, stack of papers, office supplies, receipts, and so on and so forth. The top surface and the floor beneath my desk were always cluttered and a constant source of frustration for me, plus it was a drain on my creativity and energy as I always struggled to keep or find things (I’ve learned over the years that my ultimate luxury is having a clean and spotless desk). Finally replacing the nice but useless desk with something that was more basic and functional (similar to the table on the right) relieved some of my stress and boosted my productivity tremendously as I tend to work better in an organized and clutter-free environment.
